Veterans’ Parade Nov. 11, 2006

only Medal of Honor recipient living in oregon to lead Veterans’ parade nov. 11, 2006

Robert Maxwell and military veterans who served in World War I to the Iraq War to be honored at 32nd annual parade and presentation in Hollywood District

PORTLAND, ORE. – (Nov. 1, 2006) – Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Robert Maxwell, Bend, Ore., will be the grand marshal of the 32nd Annual Veterans’ Day parade Nov. 11, 2006, in Portland’s Hollywood District. Maxwell, the only Medal of Honor recipient living in Oregon, was awarded the country’s highest military honor for his heroism during World War II in Besancon, France.

The parade forms near Northeast 40 Avenue and Tillamook Street at 10 a.m., and continues through the Hollywood District, ending with a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Flag Pole in front of the Ross Hollywood Chapel on Northeast Sandy Boulevard.

Keynote speaker will be Charles Larry Deibert of Corbett, Ore., who received the Distinguished Service Cross for his action in the Vietnam War. He currently serves as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for the state of Oregon.

World War I veteran Howard Ramsay, Portland, who is 108 years old, is also planning to attend. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are fewer than 50 living veterans of the First World War.

Other distinguished guests will include Kenneth Reusser, Lake Oswego, who served in World War II and the Korean War and is the recipient of two Navy Crosses and Frank Gehrman, Silverton, who served in the U.S. Army in World War II and holds the Distinguished Service Cross.

The 142nd Fighter Wing of the Portland Air National Guard will conduct a military flyover during the event.

Color guards from all service branches and members of veterans’ organizations, auxiliary units, and the Boy and Girl Scouts will march in the parade, joined by the Grant High School marching band.

All area veterans are invited to march in the parade and/or attend the ceremony. Seating for senior citizens and the disabled will be available at the ceremony.

The Hollywood Boosters business organization will line Sandy Boulevard with United States flags the morning of the parade. The parade is an annual event in the Hollywood District and is sponsored by area veterans, the Ross Hollywood Chapel and the Hollywood Boosters.

The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can awarded to an individual serving in the U.S. Armed Services. The Medal is only given to those whose brave actions in combat can be well documented; consequently, only about 3,500 have been awarded since it was initiated by Congress in 1861.
